House No. 47 on Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street

Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street is one of the oldest streets in Polotsk. Historical sources confirm its existence already in the second half of the 11th — beginning of the 12th century. From the 13th century the street was densely populated, served as one of the main streets in the city, it was crossed by the Dvina River to the city markets,  churches, synagogues, Catholic and Orthodox monasteries were located on it, the richest and most influential citizens lived there.

The first known name of this street was Velikaya Street. In the last quarter of the 18th century (in connection with the construction of St. Pokrovskaya Church) it was renamed into Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street, in 1919 — into Lenin Street, and in 2008 the street again returned the name Nizhne-Pokrovskaya. It received its current direction in accordance with the classicist plan of Polotsk developed and approved in the late 18th century, which gave the layout of the historical center of the city the features of regularity.

Two-storey building No. 47 on Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street was built in 1958. Initially it housed a kindergarten of the Polotsk Fiberglass Plant. In the early 2000s the building was adapted for residential apartments.

It is interesting that the territory of the modern house No. 47 covers the area of two historical plots of Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street in the middle of the 19th century. In 1859-1860 the owner of one of them was Polotsk burgher Aron Barkan. The building of his plot consisted of a wooden dwelling house, outbuildings and a shop.

The land within the boundaries of the second plot belonged to the St. Sophia Cathedral and was leased to the burgher Israel Avelev Roines. According to the terms of the contract the annual rent amounted to 60 kopecks in silver. Three wooden dwelling houses and outbuildings were placed on the plot.

Along the line of the western facade of No. 47 today it is possible to determine the historical route of Borovaya Street, which was first cartographically recorded in the late 18th century and existed almost until the middle of the 20th century.

A well-known resident of the house No. 47 on Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street is Yakov Borisov (born in 1938). Yakov started working at the Polotsk Fiberglass Plant in 1960 as a slinger, after graduating from the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute in 1966 he took the position of the factory's shop manager, and in 1983 he became the head of the enterprise.

Yakov Borisov worked as Director of Polotsk Production Association until 1998.
