House No. 30 on Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street

Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street is one of the oldest streets in Polotsk. Historical sources confirm its existence already in the second half of the 11th — beginning of the 12th century. From the 13th century the street was densely populated, served as one of the main streets in the city, it was crossed by the Dvina River to the city markets, churches, synagogues, Catholic and Orthodox monasteries were located on it, the richest and most influential citizens lived there.

The first known name of this street was Velikaya Street. In the last quarter of the 18th century (in connection with the construction of St. Pokrovskaya Church) it was renamed into Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street, in 1919 — into Lenin Street, and in 2008 the street again returned the name Nizhne-Pokrovskaya. It received its current direction in accordance with the classicist plan of Polotsk developed and approved in the late 18th century, which gave the layout of the historical center of the city the features of regularity.

House No. 30 on Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street was built in the first half of the 19th century as a dwelling. The stone two-storey building is made in the style of classicism, its architecture is characterized by majestic simplicity, austerity, laconism of forms, lack of numerous details.

It should be noted that the stone building on the place of the modern house No. 30, labeled as "commoner's building", is present on all plans of Polotsk, starting from 1778, but there is no information about its appearance until the middle of the 19th century. It is known that in 1859-1860 the existing two-storied stone building was already erected and it housed the Jewish state school of the 1st category. However, the exact date of the beginning of construction is unknown.

In the middle of the 19th century, the historical plot on which the existing house was located belonged to Leiba Livshits, a Polotsk burgher; its dimensions were much larger than those of the present-day territory of house No. 30. In addition to the Jewish school, there were four wooden houses and outbuildings.

At the beginning of the XX century in the house No. 30 on Nizhne-Pokrovskaya Street for some time housed the city bank, and after the October Revolution the building was municipalized and is still used as a residential building.

According to the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus of 14.05.2007 No. 578 the house No. 30 on Nizhne-Pokrovskaya St. is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Belarus.
