Korchaga

Its shape and painting is distinguished by a tall earthen vessel - korchaga. The dishes resemble an antique amphora - with a convex body, two curved arms and a narrowed lower part. The inside of the Korchaga is covered with green glaze, from the outside its upper part and handles are painted with a floral ornament in yellow, orange and green colors.

In the 19-20th centuries in peasant life such dishes had the most diverse purpose. It was used for heating water, brewing beer, kvass, home brew, sweating - boiling linen with lye (water infusion of wood ash, replacing soap). When brewing beer the hoppers covered the neck with a canvas and coated it with dough. In the oven the dough was baked into a dense crust hermetically sealing the vessel. Korchags also kept pickles (mushrooms, cucumbers, cabbage) or transported grain.
